9 Unbelievable things that would happen if Earth stopped!
Although the cataclysms we love to watch only in the cinemas, some of them are very easy to imagine. Given the information about the possibilities of the end of the world, we have an article for you in which NASA scientists describe what would happen if the Earth ceased to revolve. This time it's not a movie script, but scientific facts. And we hope they will never come true.
1. Everything would fly east
Although we don't feel it, the Earth is moving at 1675 km/h or 465 meters/second. That’s 1,040 miles/hour. That means that without noticing it, you’re moving almost half a kilometer through space. According to Sten Odenwald from NASA, if Earth would stop spinning, everything would be swept away from its surface, then would fly east at speed and eventually fall back down.
If Eart stops moving, it would cause the water from seas and oceans turn into terrifically powerful tsunamis. Because of the power of momentum, this huge and high waves would go east and drown the coastal cities from the surface of Earth. Everything would be under water.
3. Strong winds
Even if Earth would stop spinning, the atmosphere would still be moving and its momentum would make it rotate, probably few times, around the planet. Initial air flow speed would be extremely high: more than 1,100 mph. It can be said that it would be like a very strong wind that would break everything on the surface of the Earth.
4. New arrangement of oceans and land
Right now water is gathering at the equator because of the centrifugal force. The Earth's stop would cause that new continent form surrounded by two oceans. It would look like 2 great oceans on both poles and the new continent on the equator. What's more, the land would be gigantic and cover the whole planet through the equator.
5. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions
A sudden stop of the earth would cause that its kinetic force and momentum would simply shake the whole planet. What would happen is easy to imagine or predict. On earth would have occurred extremely strong hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, and destructive earthquakes. The catastrophic effects we also know from movies.
6. Climate disturbance
Despite stopping the Earth, it might still be spinning around the Sun. That would cause that one of half globe would be heated while on the other would occur eternal darkness and would be cold as Antarctic. NASA tells also another version. According to them, Earth would stop moving completely, and there would be a 6-month day followed by a night of the same length.
7. Disappearing of magnetic field
The magnetic field that surrounds our planet is made because of the outer core processes and the planet’s spinning motion. It is protecting the globe from dangerous cosmic radiation and solar wind. Sten Odenwald predicts, that after the Earth stops, the magnetic field would disappear. And the charged particles from the sun would destroy every single living being.
8. Hard living conditions
Even if people would be survived, all the disasters written before they would have to live in very difficult conditions. First of all, they would have to learn how to adapt to the new environment, on the border of night and day. What's more, they would have to stay and live underground and because of radiation. They would be able to go outside only in protective suits.
9. Falling moon
According to Prof. Vaughan Pratt from Stanford University, if Earth would stop moving, the Moon would gradually lose its speed too. Also, its distance from our planet Earth would be reduced. Professor says that with time the Moon would probably just fall eventually on the Earth, which would cause other disasters...
