5 Less known facts about Kapil Sharma - The King of comedy
1. Poor childhood
Who doesn't know about this guy? Kapill Sharma who is an Indian stand-up comedian, television presenter and actor was born on 2 April 1981 in Amritsar, Punjab. He hosted his first television comedy show Comedy Nights with Kapil from June 2013 to January 2016. Currently, he is hosting another comedy show on Sony Entertainment Television named The Kapil Sharma Show. He is the first Indian comedian who appeared in the Forbes India Celebrity list in 2012, ranked 95th. His father Jeethendra Kumar was a head constable in the Punjab Police and his mother is a housewife. His brother, Ashok Kumar is also a constable. Kapil studied at the Hindu college in Amritsar, Punjab. He said that his mother is the biggest inspiration for his sense of humour and encouragement.
He had started working in a PCO when he was in 10th class to earn some money. Kapil Sharma worked at a cloth mill and even gathered soft drink crates, but he flipped through all his troubles with his humour, and became who he is today. His childhood was not rich, he used to go to his neighbour's house to watch television. His father died in 2004 due to Cancer. He was living in one small room with his brother and mother. Just think how this poor guy became India's no.1 comedy king.
2. 10 years of hard work in theatre arts
This is what he said in an interview, “I started doing theatre in college, but did not have money to give the fees. But since I was good in theatre, various colleges sponsored my education, so that I could represent them in the youth festivals. They would ask me which course I would like to join. And I would ask, ‘Which is the most expensive course?, they said Commercial Art and I took that up. I didn’t even know what it was. Though I did not attend many classes, I also post that, did a diploma in Computer Science and used to love the computer classes as that was the only room with an AC. In reality, I learnt nothing about either Commercial Arts or Computer Science.”
This may sound false but it’s true that Kapil and Chandan who is working with him in his show are childhood buddies. They used to live in same village and same school. They both started learning theatre arts together and gave audition together for the TV show, hence Chandan was selected and Kapil was rejected and kapil decided to give audition again and selected.
3. Won first prize on national TV & Started hosting his own show
kapil Sharma won about 10 lakh INR as the winner of ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge’ and he spent all his prize winning money on his sister’s wedding. Kapil made his first appearance debut in television with the Punjabi comedy show ‘Hasde Hasande Ravo’ and then participated in the comedy reality show ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge’. Surprisingly, he was rejected from the reality show audition and later, he received a call to enter the show. This was the turning point in his career and he utilized this opportunity to the fullest. It is known to everyone that he won that season of ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge’.
After winning the national award and performing in a few more episodes in comedy shows, he hosted his own show "Comedy Nights With Kapil" and within a short time this show received the most popular TRP (Television Rating Point) in Indian television. His famous dialogue "Babaji Ka Thullu" became very famous and his LIVE comedy made him the best Indian Comedian ever.
4. End of his struggle
Kapil had co-hosted the first Punjabi International Film Awards in 2012 at Toronto. His childhood dream was to become a singer, and he was really good at it, but than he became a great comedian instead of a singer. He used to host shows all over India, even on cruise trips. Now, he has his own production house, his own team who's also the best comedians of India. Special characters in his show are Dadi, Dr. Gulati and Chandan, a chai wala and these people are enough to make a show successful.
He has many other wins to add to his credits like the ‘Comedy Circus’. After his successful shows, he got an offer for a movie, which was directed by Abbas-Mustan. Kapil played the lead role in the movie "Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon", which was a comedy and romantic movie. And thus, he became a comedian and Bollywood actor. This movie rocked the box office and Kapil's career too.
5. Became the No.1 comedian
Did you know? Kapil’s first love is music, and he is happy with the things he has. He always likes the simple things in life. Because he's a good singer, he participated in the singing competition, ‘Star Ya Rockstar’. He’s one of the most popular television personalities till date. And is definitely going places by acquiring a three-year contract with Yash Raj Films.
He has also hosted the show ‘Chhote Miyan’ for the first time in his career.
