Firstly, can you see that little groove at the end of the tape? Well, we have to say that it’s not there simply for the design! In fact, it’s so you can easily fit the tape to a nail or screw, so that it’s much easier to measure. It also secures the tape in place. Yay!
Secondly, that jagged edge isn’t also located there to give a simple nice touch. Actually it’s a scribing tool to help you measure. If you don’t have a pencil close at hand, you can easily mark the material that you’re working on by simply moving the toothed part from one side to another.
And did you notice the metal hook at the end of each tape? Believe it or not but this hook takes 1/16 inch of your first centimeter. So to get measurements more accurate, you should first pull this latch a bit because it easily moves back and forth and then measure.
At the base of each tape there is a number which tells you what is the base length of the tape. It makes it easy to take an inside measurements. For example if you have to measure an inside of the window and the bend of the tape destroys the proper reading, then you can just use the base of the tape as a part of your measurements. Simply put the tape in place and add to your results the length of the tape.
