Kids Left By Their Moved Lived With The Decaying Corpse Of Their Brother For A Year.

In the second half of October 2021, shocking information began to circulate the world media. What happened to a certain group of siblings is chilling. Police in Harris County, Texas received a call from a 15-year-old saying that his 8-year-old brother had been dead for almost a year and his body was in the next room. The teen also confessed that his mother had abandoned him and his two younger brothers. The boys lived alone, left without the means to live. As it turned out, there was a murder in the apartment they were staying in, their brother did not die a natural death. The sheriff in charge of the case called the boys' fate "a gruesome case of child abandonment," adding that it seemed too horrific to be true. Unfortunately, the story is as true as can be. How did the three boys come to live with their brother's decomposing body for a year? What are the circumstances of the case and what did their mother have to say when she was found and arrested?

Phonecall To The Sheriff’s Office

Exactly on Sunday, October 24, 2021, an employee of the Harris County Sheriff's Office in Texas received a call from a 15-year-old boy who had shocking information to share. The teenager claimed that for nearly a year, he and his two younger brothers had been living alone without any care because their mother had abandoned them and left them for dead. However, the more striking news was that the body of their 8-year-old brother was decomposing in the apartment where they were staying. The report turned out to be genuine. When police went to the address given by the teenager, the West Oaks Apartments complex in Houston, Texas, they found three minor children, ages 15, 10, and 7. According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the abandoned boys had been living in extremely deplorable conditions for a long time. The apartment had a strong stench of decomposing human flesh. There was no furniture, no bedding. The floors and carpet were covered with dirt, and there were many vermin around; flies and cockroaches.

Apartment Was A Crime Scene

The teen confessed to authorities who arrived on the scene that their mother, 35-year-old Gloria Y. Williams had left home several months earlier and never returned. In addition, the apartment where she abandoned her children was a crime scene. The body of their brother had decomposed in one of the rooms. The forensic doctor who examined the skeletal remains of the child confirmed that the boy's death was a homicide. An autopsy revealed that Kendrick, who was 8 years old at the time of his death, died as a result of "domestic violence with multiple blunt injuries." The oldest sibling revealed to investigators that his younger brother Kendrick died in the very room where his remains were found. He also said that although their mother's partner, Brian W. Coulter locked him in one of the rooms, he heard the man beating Kendrick. The 15-year-old was not the only one who had something to say about the case. The other brother, who is 10, testified to investigators that he witnessed Coulter kicking and punching Kendrick in the back and lower body until the 8-year-old stopped moving. The abuser then covered his body with a blue blanket.

Malnourished with signs of physical injury

According to information provided by the police, the youngest boys appeared malnourished and showed signs of physical injury. The children were taken to the hospital for evaluation of their condition and observation, where they were confirmed to be malnourished, showing signs of abuse and neglect. The woman's 10-year-old son had an untreated fracture in his jaw, of which Coulter also appeared to be the perpetrator. The boy will undergo surgery soon, officials said. The 7-year-old also had multiple facial injuries. Sheriff Gonzalez added that the siblings were apparently "fighting for each other" and the 15-year-old was looking after his younger brothers. Investigators said the boys had special needs, noting that early information indicated that the deceased Kendrick had autism. The disorder, one of the surviving brothers is also believed to have.

They were there when the body was decomposing

At a news conference, Sgt. Dennis Wolford, the lead investigator for the sheriff's homicide unit, said the boy whose remains were found in the apartment died around Thanksgiving. Sheriff Gonzalez said the skeletal remains "were visible" and "were not hidden in any way." He stressed that what happened to the children was heartrending. "They were there when the body was decomposing," said a visibly disturbed and moved sheriff. The man also added that in his entire career, he has never seen such a scenario under such horrific circumstances. Gonzalez called the boys' fate "a gruesome case of child abandonment" and added that it seemed too horrific to be true. Other members of the sheriff's office were also very concerned and worried about what happened. According to information provided by Harris County Sheriff's Deputy Thomas Gilliland, the apartment where the children were found had no electricity for at least several weeks.

The boys were not the only occupants of the building

What is horrifying and saddening is that the boys, who were living a real nightmare in the apartment, were not the only occupants of the building. There were people living next door who were unaware of the drama going on next to them. One woman who lived in the building told reporters that she helped the 15-year-old and supported him by offering him hot meals for about six months. Neighbors claim that the teen relied on them for food after they noticed that his mother had stopped being there. They also agree that they have not seen the boy's parents for several months and claim that they were not at all aware that two younger children were also staying in the apartment. Thus, it seems that the 15-year-old may have kept the presence of his siblings a secret due to fear. He may have wanted to avoid calling the authorities because he feared problems, including the discovery of his late brother's remains.

Neighbors smelled an unpleasant odor

It could be said that the children who were living a real-life horror were let down by many people. No one took a serious interest in what was going on in the apartment they occupied. Several neighbors repeatedly reported to the administration of the apartment complex the unpleasant odor emanating from a neighboring apartment, and while this may come as a shock, no action was taken. One neighbor said that she even stopped turning on the air conditioner so that the horrible smell would not permeate her apartment. The woman revealed to reporters that she moved in about 18 months ago and added that about 4 or 5 months later, the strongly unpleasant smell started to be noticeable. Dianne Davis, who has lived in the complex for two years, told the Chronicle that the building manager regularly inspects all the apartments, and the most recent incident occurred not long before a 15-year-old boy called police. "Why couldn't they detect it? How could they not find it?" - said the woman, puzzled and shocked by the situation.

The mother and her partner arrested

Police tracked down the boys' mother and her 31-year-old partner very quickly. The two were arrested Sunday evening, the same day that the 15-year-old dialed the 911 emergency number. According to information, they were arrested at the public library where they were looking for newspaper articles about themselves and the death of the 8-year-old. The case is fresh and still developing. There are numerous indications that the couple moved out of the apartment several months after 8-year-old Kendrick's death, in March 2021 to be exact, which would indicate that the woman left her three children knowingly unattended and destitute along with the decomposing body of their brother. As Sheriff Ed Gonzalez reported on Oct. 27, the 31-year-old boyfriend of the boys' mother, Brian W. Coulter, was charged in the murder of the child, Kendrick Lee, who was 8 years old at the time of his death. A judge set bail for him at $1 million. The mother of the murdered man, Gloria Y. Williams was charged with tampering with evidence (corpse), felony child neglect, injury to a child by omission, failure to provide medical care, and failure to provide adequate supervision. She is expected to face additional charges. Both Coulter and Williams remain in custody.

The mother claims she has been seeing the children "every two weeks"

As it turns out, the family had already been in contact with social services in 2019 and 2020 regarding the children's prolonged absences from school. There were also suspicions of child abuse. School district officials said the children were last enrolled in May 2020. A home visit in September 2020 went unanswered. But the pandemic has made it difficult for the school and authorities to properly monitor the family. So far, information related to the mother's testimony is divergent. According to some, when asked if she was aware that her 8-year-old son Kendrick Lee was dead, she replied: "No." And she added: "I'm sorry. I didn't." However, she reportedly told deputies later that she witnessed her boyfriend hitting her dead son in November 2020 and that she tried to stop him. She said she returned to the room where the beating took place the next day and found the 8-year-old dead under a blanket. According to details released in court, Williams admitted that she knew her son was dead but did not notify law enforcement because Coulter told her not to. She explained that she feared her children would be taken away and she and would go to jail. Williams also claimed that she occasionally stopped by to check on the children. "I would catch up with them every two weeks," the 35-year-old told the news station.

The boys' family situation

Gloria Williams is the biological mother of the children, but her boyfriend, Coulter is not the father of either child. Investigators believe one of the fathers is dead and the other has no contact with his children. Courtney Lee, who is the biological father of Kendrick Lee and two of the three surviving boys, 15-year-old Jordan, and 10-year-old Trevon, told the Daily Mail that he was estranged from his children and learned of Kendrick's death on the news. Linda Smith, 71, the grandmother of starving and neglected 7-year-old Ja'Veon Kirklin was devastated to learn that he and his siblings had been left in deplorable conditions by their mother. The 7-year-old's grandmother resents herself for not adopting him and for not doing something for the other boys. As she confessed, all of Gloria's children lived with her for a short time in 2014, but when Gloria started bringing strange men to Linda's place, the woman asked the boys' mother to leave her home. Later, Gloria disappeared and the grandmother did not see her grandson for about 3 years. Moreover, the family of Daryl "Wayne" Towner, Gloria Y's ex-husband, spoke out. Williams told the press that he helped raise the children, including her 8-year-old son, whose remains were discovered in the home. "Wayne cared for all four of Mrs. Williams' children and loved them as if they were his own," his family said in a statement through lawyer Jennine Hovell-Cox. However, the man died in August 2019 due to health issues. His loved ones were shocked by the boys' fate. As established, Gloria Y. Williams has six children. According to family members, she no longer has parental rights over her two daughters. Relatives confessed that contact with Gloria was difficult, she was estranged from her family, very closed off and only spoke to them for money.
